4 Things to Consider for Health Insurance Planning

Health insurance can be overwhelming. With high-deductible plans, copays, networks and more, it can be hard to keep track of everything.

As you plan for next year’s healthcare benefits, keep these four things in mind:

1. Maximize your benefits before they run out. Let’s start with the end of year. Have you met your deductible already or are you close? Now might be a good time to schedule that surgery or treatment you’ve been putting off in order to maximize your benefits. There can be risks involved with putting off treatment of injuries in addition to the financial implications.

2. Make sure your preferred providers are covered. Consider the healthcare providers, hospitals, and pharmacies that you prefer to ensure they fall “in-network.” In-network services and medicines are covered under a plan and count toward your out-of-pocket maximum. If you go out-of-network, you’ll likely have to pay more.

3. Plan around your deductibles. High-deductible health care plans have been trending in recent years, and many employers now offer only these types of plans. Your insurance carrier will most likely have tools to help you determine the potential cost of your healthcare and how much of that will come out of your pocket before your coverage kicks in. This is where maximizing your benefits come into play. If you’ve met your deductible by mid-year, you have the rest of the year of full or mostly full coverage, which means a lot less cost to you.

4. Forecast your care. Think about upcoming procedures or treatments needed for you and your family. You might know that surgery is in your future, and 2018 might be the year you need to get it done. Or you may have a child who recently joined a sports team or started a new activity, so the risk of injury may be greater. Use these kinds of factors to determine the right plan, premiums, and deductibles so you’re prepared. Make sure and check with your provider for payment options that they offer to assist with your portion of any care that you receive.
