There are 26 bones, 33 joints, and more than 100 muscles, tendons and ligaments in your foot and ankle. No wonder most people experience a toe, foot or ankle injury at some point!
Some athletes — such as dancers, gymnasts, runners, basketball players and soccer players — are at a higher risk for injuries around the foot and ankle. Older adults may also experience injuries or fractures because of a loss of muscle mass or bone strength as they age.
Common foot and ankle problems include:
- Plantar fasciitis
- Achilles tendonitis
- Ankle sprains
- Achilles ruptures
- Tarsal tunnel syndrome
Fortunately, most minor injuries will heal on their own. Treatment usually includes application of a brace, splint or cast.
In other cases, physical therapy, medicine or surgery may be necessary. Often, treatment depends on the location, type and severity of the injury, when the injury occurred, age, overall health condition and activity level.
