He relocated to Detroit, Michigan, to complete his orthopedic residency at Ascension St. John Hospital, followed by a fellowship in adult reconstructive surgery at the Southern Illinois University School of Medicine in Springfield, Illinois.

Following his fellowship training, Dr. Peterson returned to Iowa, where he currently serves on the faculty of special medicine at Des Moines University in addition to his duties at Capital Orthopaedics & Sports Medicine. Dr. Peterson is a sought-after lecturer both locally and at the national level.
